Preface Improving Our Understanding of Gastroparesis

This issue of Gastroenterology Clinics of North America was written to help provide physicians and clinical investigators a better understanding of gastroparesis, a symptomatic chronic disorder of the stomach characterized by delayed gastric emptying. Gastroparesis is an increasingly recognized and diagnosed disorder. Symptoms of gastroparesis can be variable and include early satiety, nausea, vomiting, postprandial fullness, and upper abdominal pain. These symptoms can range from mild to severe, leading to such complications as malnutrition, functional disability, and multiple hospitalizations. The three most common etiologies are diabetes, postsurgical complications, and idiopathic causes. Treatment consists of dietary manipulation, medical treatment, and surgical therapy and can be extremely challenging. New and effective therapies for symptomatic control and, ultimately, disease control, are needed; these will come through better understanding of the pathophysiology of gastroparesis and the biological basis of the disease. This issue provides a comprehensive and in-depth review that captures new and emerging information on this syndrome. Each article is written by an expert in the area, enabling the reader with a better appreciation of the
