HYPOHISTIDINEMIA I N JUVENILE RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS W. ENDRES, K. BIRKMEIER and E. STOEBER

Hypohistidinemia in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in adults was first described in 1950 by Borden et al. ( 1 ) and later observed by three other groups ( 2 , 5, 9). This study was undertaken to investigate the level of plasma histidine in children with RA . METHODS We measured plasma histidine levels (PHL) in 86 children
Both groups of RA-with and without systemic manifestations-have decreased PHL (0.059~0.014 pmoleslml respectively 0.063 iO.0 17 pmoledml; M k S . D . ) , however, the difference between PHL of the two groups of RA is not statistically significant (Fig. 2). It is of interest to note that both groups of RA show statistically significant differences in PHL before and after breakfast, contrary to the controls (Fig. 3 ) . controls
about 2 hours after a non-standardized breakfast. Heparinized blood was centrifuged within 10 minutes after venipuncture, protein was removed from the plasma with 50 mg of 5-sulfosalicylic acid per ml and the plasma then stored at -20°C until analysis. Ion-exchange column chromatography of basic amino acids was performed according to Spackman et al. (7).
