We read with great interest the paper o f Freudenberg et al. about H L A antigen frequencies in patients with progressive systemic sclerosis and m o r p h e a [1]. We have attended to this subject [2]. Till n o w we have examined 40 patients suffering f r o m progressive systemic sclerosis (PSS) by testing 34 antigens (11 o f the A locus, 17 o f the B locus, and 6 of the C locus). We c a n n o t confirm the results o f Freudenberg et al. [1] and Hughes et al. [3] as regards a high frequency o f B8 in patients suffering f r o m this disease. In fact, we found B8 in 3 o f 40 patients with PSS (7.5 %). B8 has the same frequency in our control subjects (8.4 %). O n the contrary, we f o u n d decreased frequency o f A2, B15, C w l ( P < 0.05; Pc > 0.05), and Cw5 (P < 0.005 ; Pc > 0.05). We agree with Freudenberg et al. [1] as regards the opportuneness o f relating the frequency o f H L A antigens to the kind o f PSS. With this object in mind we use the subclassification o f this disease that we have tried to formulate recently [4, 5].
