In 1975, Nyulassy et al. (1975) demonstrated in 1 5 cases of subacute thyroiditis statistically significant increased frequency of HLA-Bw 35(W5) antigen. We had the opportunity of examining HLA antigens in 16 patients with subacute thyroiditis. The control group consisted of 2 3 1 healthy unrelated individuals. We determined seven antigens of HLA-A locus (A-1.2, 3 , 9 , 10, 1 1 , 2 8 ) and 1 5 antigensof HLA-B locus (B-5, 7, 8, 12, 1 3 , 14, 18, 27, Bw-14, 16, 1 7 , 2 1 , 2 2 , 35,40) using a standard NIH technique in a two-stage microlymphocytotoxicity test. The HLA-Bw 3 5 antigen was tested with 9 sera: 3 sera of anti-HLA-Bw 35, 5 sera of anti HLA-Bw 3 5 4- B 5 weak and 1 serum of anti HLA-Bw 3 5 4- B 8. As is evident from Table 1 we confirmed the finding of Nyulassy e i al. (1975): HLABw 3 5 was found in 10 out of 16 patients, i.e. 62.5%, compared to the 14.29% frequency in healthy subjects. This difference seems statistically significant. As to the other antigens determined, no statistically significant difference between the two groups could be established.

I t is noteworthy that we - like Nyulassy et al. (1975) - succeeded in demonstrating the increased frequency of HLA-Bw 35 for subacute thyroiditis on a small panel of practically the same number of probands. Both results thus serve as evidence for the existing relationship between subacute thyroiditis and HLA-Bw 35 antigen. Table 1 Frequency of H L A - R W ’ 3 5 antigen in subacute tbyro idit is.
