MURPHY Richard Slockton Stare College Summary.-Of 125 undergraduates, those who reported greater frequency of the symptoms of both tension and of migraine headaches obtained higher scores on Beck's self-report depression inventory but were not more suicidal.

Blanchard, Kirsch, Appelbaum, and Jaccard (1989) reported that chronic headache sufferers from migraine, tension, and mixed headaches were more depressed than a nonheadache control group. The present study was designed to explore whether headaches are related to depression and suicidal ideation in a nonclinical population. A questionnaire was administered anonymously to 45 male and 75 female undergraduates in social science courses at a state college (M,,, = 24.0 yr., SD = 8.0). It contained the Beck Depression Inventory (Beck, Ward, Mendelson, Mock, & Erbaugh, 1961), together with questions about an history of previous suicidal ideation, threats, or attempts. Questions on the frequency of migraine and tension headache symptoms were taken from Blanchard, et al. (1989). Mean scores (with SDs) for depression were 6.8 (7.1), migraine headache symptoms 13.4 (3.0), and tension headache symptoms 12.1 (3.0). Scores on the migraine headache scale were associated with scores on the tension headache scale (Pearson r = 0.43, one-tailed p
