GUEST EDITORIAL EAS 2015—Analytical Innovation from Benchtop to Business November 16–18, 2015 Garden State Exhibit Center Somerset, New Jersey The theme of the 2015 Eastern Analytical Symposium and Exposition is “Analytical Innovation from Benchtop to Business,” in recognition of the close association between what happens in the laboratory and how it affects business effectiveness. The analytical community has always been progressive and innovative. We discover new entities, create novel instruments, define scientific processes, and provide critical analytical services to tackle even the most complicated problems and challenges. Analytical innovations benefit a myriad of businesses and activities, from instrument manufacturing to pharmaceutical development, from new material development to agrochemistry, and from law enforcement to space exploration. Join us at EAS in Somerset, New Jersey, from November 16–18, 2015, where you can explore this critical linkage between analytical innovation and business, and discover novel techniques and applications in your field of analysis. In 2015, the world is celebrating the International Year of Light (IYL) and Light-Based Technologies. EAS is proud to be a sponsor of IYL. During EAS, we will be showcasing light-based analytical technologies in the technical program and the exposition, and by highlighting how they continue to revolutionize the analytical sciences. The theme of this year’s symposium pays tribute to innovation within the Analytical Community. From early laboratory prototypes to finished products, analytical scientists invent new methods, explore novel concepts, and provide critical data that solve challenging problems, support product development, manufacturing, and commercialization. The Program Committee has finalized the schedule for the oral invited and contributed sessions. The 2015

program is particularly strong in separation sciences and spectroscopy applied to fields as varied as pharmaceuticals, consumer products, environment, food, forensics and heritage conservation. To this year’s program we have added several exciting sessions on hot and current topics, such as “3-D Technology: Leveraging Today’s Tools for Tomorrow’s Applications” and “Analytical Testing for the Cannabis Industry: Consumer Safety vs. Regulatory Requirements”. For the entrepreneurs and business managers, Rutgers Business School is presenting a session on “Business Essentials for Technology Entrepreneurs” where you can learn about entrepreneurship, production and operation management, marketing, and leadership. It is not too late to submit an abstract for a poster presentation that will be a part of our technical program. The deadline for submissions is September 30. Visit our submission site at www.EAS.org/asubmit for more details and to submit your work. The Short Course Committee brings back traditional short courses that are in demand by members of the community. It has developed exciting new courses that meet your evolving needs. Knowledge is the key to success in the laboratory enterprise, and the slate of EAS short courses provides real world, tangible knowledge on a variety of topics. The instructors are experts in their specialties, and they communicate the important, and sometimes esoteric, nature of techniques and problems encountered in everyday laboratory work. Check out the 35 offerings this year, including a wide variety of courses on GC, MS, HPLC, and vibrational spectroscopy, as well as safety and compliance. You are sure to find topics that will provide essential knowledge and enhance your career in analysis. The complete list of APPLIED SPECTROSCOPY 219A

EAS short courses, descriptions, and schedule is available on our website at www.EAS.org. For those looking to cultivate a successful career, be sure to check out the workshops specifically designed with your professional development in mind We will offer three Workshops related to employment: “Getting Hired - Secrets of a Contingency Recruiter”, “Using LinkedIn Professional Networking Services to Network Your Way to a Job and More”, and “Sharpening your Presentation Skills: An Interactive Workshop”. These workshops are included with a full conferee registration. Nobel laureate Kurt Wüthrich will be the Plenary Speaker for EAS 2015. Professor Kurt Wüthrich is a Swiss chemist/biophysicist and 2002 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry, known—in the words of the Nobel committee—“for his development of nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy for determining the threedimensional structure of biological macromolecules in solution.” His contributions to the field continue to impact today’s research with the heightened interest in protein-based therapeutics and diagnostic tools. Join us to hear Prof. Wüthrich’s lecture titled “From Basic Research in NMR to use in Daily Human Life”, Monday, November 16, 2015, at 4:30 pm. A mixer will immediately follow the lecture; all registered attendees of EAS are welcome to attend. Each year the Eastern Analytical Symposium honors analytical chemists who have distinguished career achievements. The recipients of these awards have advanced these fields by superior work in developing theory, techniques, or instrumentation. Each awardee is honored at a symposium that brings together experts of these fields for exploration of key analytical techniques and applications. EAS congratulates the following awardees in six areas of endeavor. The 2015 EAS Award for Outstanding Achievement in the fields of: • Analytical Chemistry: Dr. Chris Enke, University of New Mexico, Comprehensive Analysis and the Theory of Complex Mixtures • Separation Science: Prof. David Hage, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Frontiers in Affinity-Based Separations: Exploring New and Unique Tools for the Rapid Analysis of Clinical, Pharmaceutical, and Environmental Samples • Near-Infrared Spectroscopy: Dr. Benoît Igne, GlaxoSmithKline, When the Sample Makes (or Breaks) the Technology • Nuclear Magnetic Resonance: Prof. Tim Cross, Florida State University, Membrane Protein Structural Biology and Solid State NMR: Past, Present and Future 220A

Volume 69, Number 9, 2015

• Chemometrics: Dr. Peter Wentzell, Dalhousie University, On the Evolution of Data-Driven to Error-Driven Multivariate Analysis • Mass Spectrometry: Prof. Emile Schweikert, Texas A&M University, Molecular Analysis at the Nanoscale We are also continuing the long-standing commitment to the development of the next generation of analytical chemists. Eight deserving graduate and undergraduate student awardees from colleges and universities across the U.S. will present posters and be recognized for their scientific accomplishments in the broad field of analytical chemistry. Nowhere is this year’s theme more visible than in the development of analytical technologies and laboratory equipment. The exposition at the 2015 EAS showcases the latest innovations that drive new product development from benchtop to business. The exposition of scientific instrumentation and services will provide attendees with the opportunity to interact directly with major suppliers. This year, we are expecting over 150 companies and institutions to demonstrate their hardware, software, and services to the analytical community, making it THE place for all your laboratory needs. The exposition will also include an employment bureau, vendor workshops, and our popular technology tour. A visit to the EAS exposition will be a chance to talk directly to representatives to find out how you can benefit from their experience and services and actually see new instruments. This year, the exposition hours are extended on Tuesday afternoon to give more time for networking with exhibitors and attendees, and refreshments will be offered. We invite you to come to the Garden State Exhibit Center in Somerset, New Jersey, November 16–18, 2015, to see all that EAS has to offer. Whether you are primarily at the benchtop, primarily on the business side, or somewhere in between, there is something for you at EAS. Registration is now open; register before October 15 to receive discounted rates. We trust your visit to EAS will bring opportunities to meet and learn from excellent scientists and business leaders, and to explore the latest developments in analytical instrumentation and services. We thank all speakers, instructors, vendors, sponsors, and volunteers that make EAS possible. They make this hub of innovation possible. Visit our website, www.EAS. org, for more details on what we have to offer, to register, and to submit a poster abstract.
