01/2014 ChemPhysChem, European in origin but international in scope, deals with all aspects of the overlapping areas between chemistry, physics, biology, and materials science. It is co-owned by Chemistry Publishing Society Europe (ChemPubSoc Europe) and published by Wiley-VCH. Contributions in ChemPhysChem cover a wide range of topics including atmospheric science, hard and soft matter, femtochemistry, nanoscience, complex biological systems, single-molecule research, http://www.chemphyschem.org clusters, colloids, catalysis, and surface science; experimental and theoretical studies can be published. ChemPhysChem publishes short Communications and long Articles, as well as Reviews, Minireviews, Highlights, Concepts, Essays, Book Reviews, and occasionally Conference Full text: Reports. Authors can submit manuscripts to ChemPhysChem online through our homepage (see left) by clicking on “Submit an Article” and following the simple instructions. wileyonlinelibrary.com

Getting With the Times: A Technology Takeover Michelle Flckiger, Kate Lawrence, Kira Welter, and Greta Heydenrych*[a]

This

year holds much in store for ChemPhysChem, as we embark on a new-age electronic era. Online electronic processes are becoming increasingly important in today’s publishing landscape, be it as a means to streamline editorial processes or to provide continuous and comprehensive access to a journal’s content. With this in mind, we are poised to introduce some exciting new features that will make it easier for you to submit your manuscripts and to read ChemPhysChem articles, as well as the content of our sister journals, wherever you are.

Before we tell you more about these new electronic tools, we would like to introduce the latest member of the ChemXChem family: ChemElectroChem! [a] Dr. M. Flckiger, Dr. K. Lawrence, Dr. K. Welter, Dr. G. Heydenrych Wiley-VCH Boschstraße 12 69469 Weinheim (Germany) E-mail: [email protected]

Electrochemistry

has grown tremendously in recent years, partly fueled by the drive for cleaner energy technologies and the need for new ways to store energy, but also because of recent developments in new techniques and instrumentation that enable fundamental, and often low-cost, research. Electrochemistry no longer simply represents a subdivision of physical chemistry, but should be considered a booming research area of its own. After many of our society partners expressed the desire for a journal that focuses on electrochemistry, we decided to launch ChemElectroChem, which is co-owned by WileyVCH and ChemPubSoc Europe (our society partner consisting of 16 European chemical societies). ChemElectroChem is further supported by an outstanding international Editorial Advisory Board, chaired by Bing-Wei Mao (Xiamen University, China), Wolfgang Schuhmann (Ruhr-Universitt Bochum, Germany) and Jean-Marie Tarascon (Universit de Picardie Jules Verne, France). The editorial office of ChemElectroChem is managed by the experienced ChemPhysChem team, which was expanded in July 2013 by the addition of electrochemist Dr. Kate LawChemPhysChem 2014, 15, 3 – 4

Views. This is the internet portal jointly presented by WileyVCH and ChemPubSoc Europe to provide its readers with information about important, current, and interesting chemistry; this content is free to access and is also regularly distributed to a vast number of subscribers in the form of newsletters and the ChemViews magazine. Amongst the cornucopia of content, stimulating papers are often selected by our editorial team to be highlighted in the ChemViews magazine. A new addition is that selected “VIPs” (very important papers, which are identified based on exceptional referee reports) from the diverse journal portfolio of Wiley-VCH will be featured in the form of a “Behind the Science” interview, which was successfully piloted by ChemPhysChem (see http://www.chemistryviews.org/details/ezine/5455551/Phthalocyanine-based Nanocages.html). This new feature enables our readers to find out extra behindthe-scenes information about ground-breaking research, as well as to understand the goals of the author. However, don’t forget that ALL of our VIPs will still be highlighted on the news pages of the ChemPhysChem website.

As a part of ongoing efforts to

rence, who is now associated with both journals. ChemElectroChem is a digital journal and, therefore, will be published online only; one of the main advantages of this is that it enables us to offer free colour for all ChemElectroChem articles. The first articles are already available in EarlyView of the Wiley Online Library, so please visit the ChemElectroChem webpages, www.chemelectrochem.org, for an idea of what’s to come. We encourage you to take advantage of the fact that access to all of ChemElectroChem’s content will remain completely free of charge until the end of 2014. The inaugural issue of ChemElectroChem is scheduled to appear in January 2014 and will be a bumper issue, containing contributions from our Editorial Advisory Board members as well as other leading electrochemists, so be sure to have a look.

Back at ChemPhysChem, things are also on the move. One aspect of the new and improved electronic age is the enhanced visibility for top-rated content through Chemistry 2014 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim

streamline our processes, we are happy to announce that we are introducing a new manuscripthandling system early in 2014. This new system will be easy to use for authors and referees alike, and it will enable us to provide you with a faster and more efficient service. The new web-based system, Editorial Manager, will replace manuscriptXpress throughout the entire ChemXChem family and will also be implemented by our other sister journals. Furthermore, keeping with the digital theme, we are extending the mobile services for our readers, that is, we are about to launch the ChemPhysChem App, similar to the popular Angewandte Chemie App, as well as a new feature, the Anywhere Article. The latter will enable you to read articles from ChemPhysChem (and its sister journals) on any mobile device, anywhere, anytime.

2013

was a special year for ChemPhysChem, bringing about a significant increase in both the number of submissions and published contributions, compared with 2012 and the years before. We are extremely grateful for this continued and increasing support, and we will continue to strive to deliver the best service to you—our readers, our authors, and our referees. We wish you all a happy and successful new year!
