BYJoseph A. C. Wadsworth, MD

GEORGE NELNIS WISE DIED SUDDENLY ON JULY 31, 1974 OF A MASSIVE MYOcardial infarction. Dr Wise was born in Newport, Virginia in 1914.

He was graduated from Virginia Military Institute in 1934, and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry. After graduation from college, he attended medical school at the University of Virginia and was given his M.D. degree with honors in 1938. For two years he took post graduate training at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital. Upon completion of his postgraduate training, he began his residency in ophthalmology at the Institute of Ophthalmology of the Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York City. He was awarded a Doctor of Medical

13 Necrology Science degree and did outstanding research while in his residency. Upon completion, Dr Wise served in the United States Naval Reserve

from 1942 until 1946. After returning from military service, Dr Wise was appointed as instructor in the Department of Ophthalmology of the Columbia University School of Medicine. This first appointment began George Wise's long and continuous career as a teacher and investigator. From the beginning, he was sought after because of his thoughtful clinical acumen and empathy with those seeking his advice. His rapid acquisition of a reputation as a teacher resulted in his appointment as assistant professor in the newly organized Department of Ophthalmology at the New York University Post Graduate Medical School. During the next twenty years, he rose to the rank of full professor. While at New York University, his persistent and scholarly investigation into the vascular diseases of the retina resulted in the fundamental work on which most subsequent studies were based. In spite of a heavy academic commitment, Dr Wise had a large clinical practice and many patients that were deeply grateful to him for not only his expertise, but his intellectual honesty and deep concern for their welfare. George Wise had high standards of ethics and no matter what the pressures were, he would not compromise what he felt to be right and just. He respected the opinions and heard them out, but in no way would he agree with different philosophies if such differences compelled him to lower his standards. A plaque was presented to Dr Wise by his residents which beautifully described the man: George N. Wise Professor of Ophthalmology

Teacher and Scholar "We, the graduating residents of 1974 have had the honor and privilege of being taught and guided by your knowledge. You have instilled in us many things that have never been written in textbooks. Besides your vast knowledge in Ophthalmology, you have taught us integrity, humility, and the true meaning of the word physician. We will always be proud and grateful for those values you have given us in moulding our careers as physicians."
