Editorial

From the Editor A lot has happened since my last editorial. Annals of Medicine and Surgery (AMS) is now published by Elsevier and we have a new website at: www.annalsjournal.com. Allan Ross (formerly of the International Journal of Surgery) is our new Publisher, based at Elsevier’s New York office. Our Editorial Board has been developed further but there is still a long way to go. I am proud to say that manuscript submissions are up and we are receiving increasing interest from potential reviewers who wish to join our reviewer pool. The journal’s content is now archived on Science Direct and open access. This issue has an eclectic blend of content that I hope will become typical for the journal. The first article to mention is intraoperative cell salvage in revision hip surgery by Herd et al. They found that intraoperative cell salvage was effective in reducing rates and volume of postoperative allogenic transfusion in patients undergoing revision hip surgery. The study was a collaborative effort between medical students and qualified physicians, it also fits with the journal’s trainee-orientated approach to publication.

Next we have a systematic review by Elliott Carthy on autonomic dysfunction in essential hypertension, believed to be secondary to increased arterial stiffness. Carthy calls for research to establish the effectiveness of pharmacotherapies at each stage of hypertension and for more consistent study designs. Patel et al’s survey to determine the potential impact of foundation year career aims on surgical specialty training. Amazingly there was a 100% response rate amongst the 67 foundation doctors approached. However, only 16.4% were considering applying for core surgical training in the United Kingdom. Leaders of the profession need to look closely at how we can motivate talented medical students and graduates to pursue a career in surgery. We hope that you enjoy this issue and of course would welcome your feedback on the journal. Riaz Agha, Editor-in-Chief E-mail address: [email protected].
