n this number of Clinical Cases in Mineral and Bone Metabolism (CCMBM) we have collected a formidable number of articles, witnessing the great interest towards our Journal from Authors from different parts of the world. CCMBM is growing in contributions that include Reviews, Original Articles and Case Reports, all focusing in the area of bone and mineral metabolism. The numbers of the Journal receive a great plause from our readers, as daily we receive requests for articles’ reprints and for permission to copy the beautiful published images. A group of introductory articles in this number of CCMBM explores the pharmacological interventions to prevent fragility fractures and cure osteoporosis. Bruno Frediani et al. reviewed the clinical data supporting the use of clodronate in osteoporosis and osteoarticular disorders, with a focus on future applications of this old and very popular molecule. Raffaella Michieli et al. discuss the plus and minus of the intervention with generic bisphosphonates in osteoporosis. Emanuela Bartolozzi reviewed the innovative area of the use of natural compounds in osteoporotic patients. Finally, Silva Ottanelli introduces the practical concepts in the prevention and therapy of osteoporosis in cancer patients. Another important area discussed in this number of CCMBM by Edoardo Mannucci et al. is the action of drugs used in type 2 diabetes on bone remodelling, bone quantity and bone quality. This is a topic that is rapidly growing in knowledge with an impact in the cliniBy the International Osteoporosis Foundation cal management of these patients. Two important phenotypes that segregate with bone fragility are vascular calcification and sarcopenia. These two topics are reviewed respectively by Pawel Szulc and Laura Sartiani et al. The novelty on the use of hip and spine echography in the diagnosis of osteoporosis is presented in an interesting article by Sergio Casciaro et al. Four articles are dedicated to reviewing different rare disorders than affect bone either directly or indirectly. These include: a review on rare causes of osteoporosis, two reviews on Gaucher disease and one on hypophosphatasia. For the interest of our specialists on dental disorders three articles treat topics that link dental diseases and bone metabolism. One review by Luigi Barbato et al. focused on periodontitis and bone metabolism, another by James Graham on new methodologies to measure bone mineral density in dental radiographs, and an original article by Niccolò Nuti et al. describes periodontal disease in Paget’s disease of bone. Massimo Mariotti et al. reviewed the new basic research model “danio rerio” and its potential applications in bone research. This issue of CCMBM also includes two original case reports, one on hyperparathyroidism by Aasem Saif and another on osteogenesis imperfecta by Evelise Brizola et al. As always CCMBM takes only responsibility for the editorial content and peer-review. CCMBM is capitalizing the excitement and the interest of its readers towards the Journal and its contents. I am confident that the Journal will continue to grow reaching an increasing audience of physicians with an interest in bone health. Maria Luisa Brandi, M.D., Ph.D.
