Invited Editorial Focus on sugar-sweetened beverages The rising contribution of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSB) to the human diet is a relatively recent phenomenon. One report estimated that US consumption of SSB rose from 40 to 187 litres per person per annum in just five decades(1). While consumption appears to be levelling off in recent years, today still millions of persons around the world consume as much as 20 % of their daily energy in the form of caloric fluids. SSB have been the focus of concern because of the global obesity epidemic, today affecting over 1·4 billion people, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Childhood obesity has increased worldwide by 54 % since 1990, and it is estimated that there are currently over 42 million children
