While the position of women in society has advanced since Victorian times, racism remains endemic within British society. Today’s NHS is institutionally racist in its treatment of its black nurses – most of whom are stuck in the lowest pay bands. They are given few opportunities and little encouragement to advance their careers. It is shocking that there are so few black nurses at the top table of today’s NHS. It will take time for today’s NHS to make a big push for diversity and to promote positively its black nurses. But putting a statue of Mary Seacole in such a prominent position opposite Westminster and in front of a prestigious teaching hospital will certainly be a step in the right direction. FIRST AID TRAINING IS ESSENTIAL FOR HOLISTIC PRACTITIONERS First aid knowledge and skills are a must for all healthcare professionals. In a world where we should all expect the unexpected, the importance of first aid knowledge and skills cannot be overestimated. But few nurses are well versed in first aid. This needs to change. All nurses should be trained in first aid skills, regardless of where they work, their grade, experience or specialism. Having grown up learning and practising first aid, I know only too well the importance of basic first aid knowledge. As nurses, we are expected to be holistic practitioners. We need first aid knowledge, training and skills to be professional, efficient, safe and effective practitioners, and to meet the needs of those in need of first aid, whatever the setting.

and Nottingham Eye Infirmary on Saturday October 25 from 1pm. All are welcome. This will take place at the Round House Pub, Royal Standard Place, NG1 6FS, part of what was once the Old General Hospital’s Jubilee wing. We would like to see how much interest there is in organising events of this nature and to see about booking a more formal event for 2015. We would like to have an idea of how many people will attend the October 25 get-together. Please show your interest by emailing me at [email protected]. I very much look forward to meeting you all. CHELTENHAM SET TO CELEBRATE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF STARTING SCHOOL We are planning a reunion weekend in Cheltenham on September 6-7 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of starting preliminary training school at Cheltenham School of Nursing. Eight of us have already arranged to meet at Cheltenham General Hospital on the Saturday September 6 at 11am. We plan to have a look round the hospital and visit the cafeteria. Lunch is booked at a local restaurant and then in the afternoon we will tour the town and go to my home for the evening to share old photographs and memories. We have kept in touch over the years, and small numbers of us meet up fairly regularly. But this will only be the third time that we have all managed to be together. As you can imagine, we have lots of memories and photographs of our time together as students. For details and information, please email me at [email protected] Rosie Crooks, by email

TWEETS OF THE WEEK I am constantly amazed at the diversity of nursing – it can be whatever you want it to be @AgencyNurse

A lot of people don’t appreciate that many introverts do well in nursing bc interaction is more 1on1 @annedraya

A smile and a thank you from a patient and relative makes a 14-hour busy shift worth it! @xVictoriaWatson

I do my job because I care & after 37 years I still care #newhcvoices @HcVoices

Here’s an up sum: in the name of the BCFUND complete strangers are visiting otherwise healthy but frail elderly and asking then to agree DNR @RoyLilley

Think it’s right nurses are involved in DNAR discussion but not like this & it should be a nurse who knows the patient @MsNaughtyCheese

If you raised awareness of DNR perhaps citizens would stop & think, then plan now before it’s rushed @TinyTonyH

We need to avoid a late decision. Proactive planning would allow pts to get what they want at end of life #NScomment @Kelly_M_OwenD
