The relationship betweenfamily history of ischaemic heart disease and the presence ofcoronary heart disease was studied in 387 patients undergoing routine coronary arteriography prior to valve replacement. One hundred and seven patients (27-6%) had a family history of ischaemic heart disease. Of these, 52 (48-6%) had significant coronary artery disease compared with 60 of 280 (21-4%) patients without afamily history (P < 0-001).
