FAI Update 2014

FAI continues to thrive. The journal is truly international with ever-increasing numbers of articles submitted by colleagues around the globe. FAI continues to attract more submissions each year, increasing from 408 in 2007 to 668 in 2013 and with an anticipated total of about 800 submissions this year. While this has resulted in a gradual decrease in our manuscript acceptance rate, from 43% in 2010 to about 30% currently, this reciprocally has increased the quality of the content of the journal and in turn the Journal Impact Factor. The Journal Impact Factor is the most commonly utilized method of assessing scientific impact of a medical periodical and is calculated by dividing the number of citations of published articles by the total number of articles published over a 2-year period. As seen in Figure 1, the impact factor of FAI has been gradually rising and was 1.626 in 2014, the highest to date. Our online presence has vastly increased during the tenure of our publisher, SAGE Publications. This growth is attributed to increased international institutional subscriptions along with complete archived FAI content, which has improved access to the scientific content of the journal in countries around the world. All American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society (AOFAS) members, US and international, along with all other FAI subscribers now have online access not just to the journal each month, but to all issues of the journal ever published, dating back to 1981. Even more exciting is that all volumes of FAI from Volume 1, Issue 1 to the present are searchable online. As a result of our enhanced online access, the journal now has 20 000 to 25 000 online article downloads per month—a momentous increase. The newest addition to the journal is the FAI CME Exam program, offering 10 hours of MOC scored and recorded credit. The first foot and ankle journal MOC offering, the 2013 Exam, is open and the 2014 Exam will be available in spring 2015 to provide subscribers the full 20 hours of scored and recorded credit required for MOC. In all regards, our specialty is burgeoning, a great reflection of which was the recent International Federation of Foot & Ankle Societies (IFFAS) 5th Triennial Scientific Meeting and the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society Annual Meeting in Chicago in September 2014. With 2 distinct meetings and 1 continuous program, this global orthopaedic event set a new record for orthopaedic foot and ankle meetings with total registrants exceeding 1250 participants. published award-winning papers from this global orthopaedic exchange (see the following). The AOFAS membership has surpassed 2100 members, including more than 500 international members. The popular Resident Scholarship Program is helping to promote the next generation of surgeons to carry our specialty forward to new achievements in clinical and basic science research. It is an exciting time to be part of our specialty, and its bright future is a result of the excellence, the vision, and the diligence of all our colleagues. Bruce J.
