Web scan Personal experiences A video series exploring the personal experiences of healthcare professionals in improving patient care is available to watch on the NHS Scotland Quality Improvement Hub video channel, at tinyurl.com/nj9uuz9 Concerning various quality improvement and leadership topics, the videos offer insight into the improvement work taking place throughout NHS Scotland. Topics range from patient safety initiatives, ‘adaptive leadership’, dementia care, bringing about change in health and social care, and the Leading for the Future programme. Explaining the health service The complexities of an ever-changing health service are explained in a new guide from NHS England. Understanding the New NHS: A Guide for Everyone Working and Training within the NHS, at tinyurl.com/plcb9gk, outlines the organisations and systems that define, sustain and regulate the NHS. Safe environments A new film on the Social Care Institute for Excellence website aims to encourage health and social care organisations to create safe environments in which staff can raise concerns as part of normal practice. Key points raised in the film include that managers should listen to what whistleblowers say and ensure the concerns raised are managed well, and that

open cultures in which concerns can be raised help build safer working environments and effective learning organisations. You can view the film at tinyurl.com/oh3dk3q Involving people A suite of resources from National Voices, the leading coalition of health and social care charities in England, aims to support commissioners and providers to access, understand and make use of the best evidence for various approaches to involving people in their own health and health care. Prioritising Person-centred Care: The Evidence, at nationalvoices.org.uk/ evidence, has a range of resources, including videos, based on evidence from more than 700 systematic reviews of what makes person-centred care happen and how to invest time and resources.

Cochrane reviews Evidently Cochrane is a website designed to make Cochrane evidence readily accessible through weekly blogs and articles containing new or updated reviews on various health-related topics. There are blogs and articles for front line staff, patients and carers as well as commissioners, policy makers and researchers focusing on, for example, warfarin loading doses, pressure-ulcer risk assessment, diagnostic test accuracy reviews, and challenges for research and current problems. There are also blogs about using social media, for sharing evidence with a vast audience and in a variety of ways. To find out more go to evidentlycochrane.net Delirium toolkit People who develop delirium often require long hospital stays and are at risk of complications such as falls and pressure ulcers. They also have higher inpatient mortality rates. Therefore, Healthcare Improvement Scotland has designed a toolkit that includes a range of resources to support healthcare professionals identify and manage delirium in clinical settings. Out for consultation Care standards The Scottish Government is reviewing and updating the National Care Standards, which set out what the public can expect from health and social care services and the standards these services are expected to deliver. Some of the proposals include that the standards are: ‘grounded in human rights’; restructured with an overarching quality standard, a set of general quality standards that would apply to all health and social care services, and a suite of specific standards for particular aspects of care or need; and regulated by the Care Inspectorate and Healthcare Improvement Scotland and, where services are not covered by these organisations, the commissioner. Mental health Proposed changes to the Mental Health Act 1983 Code of Practice aim to address recent concerns about safeguarding, quality and safety of care in mental health. Suggested changes to the code include ensuring that patients, particularly those who lack capacity, have a say in their treatment and can make complaints, and that commissioners, local authorities and healthcare professionals are clear about their roles.

Drug misuse and dependence Public Health England (PHE) is considering updating Drug Misuse and Dependence: UK Guidelines on Clinical Management, published in 2007. Although much of the advice is current, PHE wants feedback on whether an update is necessary, what recent evidence it should include, and whether there are gaps in the guidelines where additional advice is needed.
