Abstract



Present study evaluate wound healing activity of ethanolic extract of stem bark of Pongamia pinnata (PP). Evaluation of wound healing activity, 2 wound models were used i. e., incision and excision wounds were perform in this study on Albino wistar rats (150–200 g). The rats were been treated with 10 % and 5 % ointment base formulation at dose 15 µl/wound topically. The parameters studied were breaking strength in case of incision wounds, epithelization period and wound area in case of excision wound. The

Villagers traditionally use the poultice prepared from different crude extracts to treat a variety of skin ailments including wounds. Wound healing process involves coagulation, inflammation, formation of granulation tissue, matrix formation, remodeling of connective tissue, collagenization and aquisation of wound strength. During the formation of new tissue, endothelial cells proliferate and form new blood vessels [1–3]. There are several reports stating that the extracts of several plants, used for wound healing properties. Today, there is more preference to herbal medicine in maintaining of health. Research is required to find out scientific evidence of plants of Indian Ayurvedic and Unani system. Plant derived drugs have been the first line of defense in maintaining health and combating diseases [4]. Increase in scientific investigations into indigenous wealth of herbal drugs gives ample evidence of medicinal plants as sources of drugs. Pongamia pinnata Linn. (Family: Fabacae) [5] are known to posses various pharmacological activity which are published like antidiabetic, antihyperglycaemic, antilipiperoxidative, depressant, antiinflamatory, analgesic, antifilarial, antioxidant, antihyperammonemic, antiviral, antifun-
