Equine infectious diseases

Horses are amongst the early mammalian species domesticated by humans. Horses play an important societal role in both the developed and developing world. They have a very close association with humans, and the horse is perhaps the only species which is a companion and recreational animal, a sporting animal, and a food production animal. It is thus not unexpected that many infectious diseases are common to humans and horses. Equine infectious diseases are therefore of importance both from a veterinary and agricultural economic perspective and also as zoonotic infection risks for humans, especially within the context of the One Health concept. It is therefore somewhat surprising that of the 875 papers published in Veterinary Microbiology in the last two years, only 52 were related to infections of horses. This Special Issue of Veterinary Microbiology presents a series of reviews by experts in the field on major bacterial, viral and parasitic infectious diseases of horses. It is not

intended to replicate basic information that can be found in standard veterinary microbiology text books. Rather, the aim is to present an update of the most recent research on pathogenesis, prevalence and epidemiology, diagnosis, and prevention of a range of equine infections.
