E N V I R O N M E N T AND D E V E L O P M E N T A NEW FEATURE

We are pleased to announce the start of a new feature in the Journal. The feature will be concerned with the monitoring and assessment of the environmental consequences of development which is considered to be of major and increasing importance. This is a relatively new and sometimes inexact science, but one which is progressing rapidly, particularly in response to policy documents such as the World Conservation Strategy. Monitoring and assessment of natural resources was included in the original objectives of this Journal. However, so far, the papers submitted have been predominantly concerned with environmental pollution. In our view, one reason for this may be that scientists engaged in resource monitoring and assessment are often in the 'field' away from their home base for long periods of time. They therefore have less opportunity than usual for the preparation of full-length scientific papers, suitable for peer review, and for their subsequent correction, modification, etc. The aim of the feature 'Environment and Development' is to provide such people with the opportunity to convey new data, findings and opinions in a simple, short way, and relatively rapidly. This will be done by Notes, the first two of which appear below. We would emphasize that we shall continue to welcome full-length scientific papers in this field. In fact, we hope that the appearance of these Notes will stimulate the submission of such papers to the Journal. The first two Notes to appear in this feature are by Professor Philip O'Keefe, who is Manager of the Beijer Fuelwood Project for the Beijer Institute, Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. THE EDITORS
