The aim o f t h e study was t o e v a l u a t e t h e e f f e c t o f a l i d o c a i n e - p r i l o c a i n e cream (EMLA cream, A s t r a l i n r e l i e v i n g p a i n d u r i n g a r t e r i a l c a n n u l a t i o n . The study had a random, double-blind,

p l a c e b o - c o n t r o l l e d design and i n c l u d e d

a l t o g e t h e r 90 p a t i e n t s . A l l t h e p a t i e n t s were premedicated w i t h an o p i o i d b e f o r e c a n n u l a t i o n . An EMLA a p p l i c a t i o n t i m e o f 60 minutes was used i n 60 p a t i e n t s (30 EMLA/30 placebo) and t h e r e was no d i f f e r e n c e i n t h e p a i n r e a c t i o n measured on a v i s u a l analogue s c a l e (VAS) or on an o b s e r v e r ' s v e r b a l scale. The study was extended w i t h a f u r t h e r 30 p a t i e n t s (15 EMLA/15 placebo) with an a p p l i c a t i o n time exceeding 90 minutes. Between these groups p a i n experience measured by VAS d i d n o t show any s i g n i f i c a n t d i f f e r e n c e although t h e mean value was lower i n t h e EMLA group.
