The NIH issued an initiative in 2002 to construct new laboratories designed to safely handle high-containment pathogens at biosafety level 3 (BSL-3)/animal biosafety level 3 (ABSL-3) and BSL-4/ABSL-4. This initiative was largely a joint venture between the NIH and academic institutions, resulting in several large high-containment facilities throughout the USA that are now fully constructed, commissioned, and operational. Scientists in these facilities are working together with other academic institutions as well as with corporate entities to reduce the impact of emerging infections and biothreats in our world. The contributions in this special issue highlight the technologies, pathogens, and scope of work that is being performed in these high-containment laboratories and demonstrate the basis for scientific growth and expansion over the next 20 years.

We, the guest editors, would like to thank all the contributing authors and institutions for their time and effort in making this a successful edition. We would also like to thank Dr Patrik Bavoil, Chief Editor, and Ms Gillian van Beest, Editorial Administrator, for their unwavering assistance and support on this special issue of Pathogens and Disease.
