Dear Colleagues,
On behalf of the Einthoven Foundation it is our pleasure to invite you to the Einthoven 2002 meeting. In 2002 it will be 100 years ago that he published the first paper on the human electrocardiogram. As a professor of physiology at Leiden University, he had designed the string galvanometer, the first practically usable instrument to record the human electrocardiogram. He had achieved such amazing technical perfection that many modern electrocardiographs do not attain equally reliable and undistorted recordings. It is of equal importance that he developed a system of standardisation, which continues to be followed all over the world. Currently it is difficult to imagine that in the early days it was still unknown if diseases ofthe heart might lead to recognisable abnormalities in the electrocardiogram. Einthoven was fully aware of this. By meticulous studies, with a clear physiological insight and strong determination, he was able to demonstrate convincingly the significance and potential ofelectrocardiography. The importance of his work was recognised in 1924 when he was rewarded with the Nobel Prize. During the past 100 years the importance of electrocardiography, has grown to such an extent that the ECG has become the cornerstone in diagnosis and
treatment of diseases of the heart. The Einthoven Foundation is _ aware of her responsibility to celebrate the 100th anniversary of electrocardiography in an appropriate manner. The highlight of the celebration will be an international meeting in which all aspects of electrocardiography, including physiological and genetic aspects as well as invasive treatment of arrhythmias, will get proper attention. The meeting will be held in Leiden at the well-equipped Leiden University Medical Center. During the meeting the biennial Einthoven Lecture will be presented. The Einthoven Foundation is honoured that Prof. M.R. Rosen from Columbia University, New York has accepted the invitation to present the 2002 Einthoven Lecture. We are looking forward to meet you in Leiden!

The Snellen Foundation The Netherlands Society of Cardiology The Einthoven Foundation Organization
The Herman Snellen Foundation will present the Young Investigators Award to a young investigator (under 40 years of age) based on a published or accepted article from 1999/2000/2001, in the field of interest of the congress. Both experimental and clinical articles can be submitted (max. of 3 articles). Last date for submission: March 1st, 2002. The Netherlands Society of Cardiology (NVVC) will present the Professor Robles de Medina ECG Award for the most original abstract also in the field of interest of the congress. The Einthoven Award is presented biennially to a internationally renown physician who has made outstanding contributions to the field of cardiology, including fundamental as well as clinical aspects. Abstract submission Abstract submission will be possible only by using the 'abstract submission form' which can be downloaded from the Einthoven 2002 website (www.einthoven.nl). Abstracts can be submitted electronically or send by mail. All abstracts will be reviewed be the scientific committee members.
