Effect of Stress and Diazepam Treatment During Infancy on the Corticosterone Regulation and Androgenic Activity in Adult Male Rats H a n d l i n g , stress or d i s t u r b a n c e of t h e m o t h e r - i n f a n t r e l a t i o n s h i p d u r i n g i n f a n c y can m o d i f y c o n s i d e r a b l y f u r t h e r d e v e l o p m e n t of m a n y n e r v o u s a n d s o m a t i c functions~-3. I n c r e a s e d a c t i v i t y of t h e p i t u i t a r y - a d r e n a l s y s t e m a t t i m e of s t i m u l u s a c t i o n m a y be s u s p e c t e d to be i n v o l v e d in some of t h e s e p h e n o m e n a . One of t h e app r o a c h e s to an i n v e s t i g a t i o n of t h i s p r o b l e m seems t o be a p h a r m a c o l o g i c a l a l t e r a t i o n of t h e a d r e n a l c o r t e x r e g u l a t ing s y s t e m r e s p o n s i v e n e s t o w a r d s stress s t i m u l a t i o n d u r i n g infancy. I n t h i s s t u d y , d i a z e p a m t r e a t m e n t ~ was e m p l o y e d for t h a t purpose, while t h e simple i.p. saline i n j e c t i o n p r o c e d u r e served for t h e p r e w e a n i n g stress s t i m u l a t i o n ~-7. T h e e x p e r i m e n t was c o m p l e t e d b y a n i n v e s t i g a t i o n of A C T H - t r e a t e d a n i m a l s s,9 w h i c h were e x p e c t e d to reveal t h e effects of m a x i m a l s t i m u l a t i o n of t h e a d r e n a l cortex.
