Japanese Journal of Clinical Oncology, 2015, 45(1) 1 doi: 10.1093/jjco/hyu199 Editorial

Editorial in a new Journal award founded in 2013: Highly Commended Paper Award. This year’s winning article is “An Updated Report of the Trends in Cancer Incidence and Mortality in Japan” by Dr Kota Katanoda et al. (doi:10.1093/jjco/hyt038). I would like to thank and congratulate Drs. Horinouchi and Katanoda for their invaluable contribution to JJCO. The Journal published a supplement in 2014 titled “Surviving Cancer in Asia: Cross-boundary Cancer Studies, The University of Tokyo”, which also shows our coverage of broader studies linked to clinical oncology. The supplement publishes articles based on a series of lectures on cancer research held at the University of Tokyo with an aim to bring oncology research from different disciplines together for a comprehensive view of current findings on the topic. We are very keen on publishing informative and helpful review articles for our readers. However, the slight drop in the Impact Factor in 2014 (from 1.898 to 1.747*) suggests that some of the recent topics for review articles may have been too specific. The editors and I are planning new review series to start in the near future, and I hope you will enjoy reading them. Finally, I would like to thank our readers, authors, reviewers, and the members of the Editorial Board for your continuing support for the Journal. Without your interest and efforts, publication of the Journal would be impossible. * 2014 Journal Citation Reports® (Thomson Reuters, 2014)

Another successful year has passed for the Japanese Journal of Clinical Oncology. The Journal has seen a steady increase in submissions, and total submissions in 2014 are estimated to be nearly 850, which is nearly a 10 percent increase from 2013. More than half of the submissions now come from outside of Japan, and I hope that this trend will continue. I am proud of, and grateful to our Editors, Associate Editors, and Reviewers for their expedient work at review; despite the increase in submissions, the Journal has been able to give authors a first round decision within three weeks after submission on average, and much less in many cases. I would like take this opportunity to update you with some changes to our editorial board members. Drs. Takeshi Kodaira, and Motoo Nagane started as Associate Editors in 2014 to support us with the ever growing number of submitted manuscripts in areas such as radiation therapy and neurosurgery. At the same time, we sadly had to see the departure of our long-serving Editor, Dr Soichiro Shibui. Dr Shibui joined the Editorial Board first as a Managing Editor in 1990, and has contributed his time and effort generously to support the development of the Journal. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Dr Shibui for the years of devotion to the Journal and hope he will continue to support JJCO in the future. As most readers may already be aware, the Journal has several awards for our contributors. The 2013 Paper of the Year has been awarded to “Short Hydration in Chemotherapy Containing Cisplatin (≥75 mg/m2) for Patients with Lung Cancer: A Prospective Study” by Dr Hidehito Horinouchi et al. (doi: 10.1093/jjco/hyt122). The Journal’s main focus is clinical, but we have been broadening our scope to include more epidemiological and statistics articles as we perceived demands from our readers and authors in these areas, which resulted
