Editorial 7th International Symposium on Microdialysis

Since the initial use of microdialysis in research, almost 50 years ago, many improvements have been made and new applications suggested. The 7th International Symposium on Microdialysis was organized in Poitiers – France – on May 23–24th 2013, to offer a unique opportunity for more than 100 microdialysis specialists to exchange present recent accomplishments as well as discuss remaining challenges for the future. Membranes have been optimized to improve recovery and reduce experimental variability. Probes are now commercially available for a wide range of applications, from brain microdialysis studies in small animals such as transgenic mice to clinical experiments in human. Progresses in analytical chemistry have also largely contributed to the development of the technique. However, many constraints remain and microdialysis studies with large molecules such as monoclonal antibodies or cytokines are still very challenging. Therefore solving these methodological issues constitutes one of the most important challenges for the future. Various areas of biological but also pharmacological research will benefit from that. Furthermore combining microdialysis with other modern approaches such new imaging technologies is also very promising

in particular in neurosciences. However, microdialysis is not only a unique tool facilitating fundamental or applied research. In the near future regulatory authorities may want to rely on microdialysis data for bioequivalence determination of topical products. Microdialysis is also used on routine basis in many institutions for the monitoring of various types of patients such as pediatric or neurological patients. The extra-cost of using microdialysis in clinical practice should then be compared with the benefits. Microdialysis is no more a brand new technique developing rapidly. However, this 7th symposium demonstrated that it would not be possible to define a typical microdialysis user since the participant list indicated clearly that the technique was of interest to people with a wide range of background and questions or expectations, creating stimulating and rich discussions among attendees. This diversity is reflected by the articles published in this special issue of the European Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences and mostly written by invited speakers. Because of the success of this meeting and the willingness of participants to meet again, it was decided that a 8th International Symposium on Microdialysis will be organized in Uppsala (Sweden) in 2016.
