WEBWISE Ebola Virus Disease: Clinical Management and Guidance As part of the UK government’s response to the outbreak of Ebola in west Africa, Public Health England has launched a health protection resource on the Gov.UK website. This resource offers a wealth of information for healthcare professionals requiring expert advice, including a postcode search for local health protection teams. It lists phone numbers for those who need to sound the alert to the emergency preparedness switchboard and infectious diseases notification. The site is a model of clarity and accessibility, with homepage links to sections on primary and secondary care, diagnosis, guidance for non-healthcare locations and advice for people going to and from affected countries. There is also information on risk assessment and an overview of the history, origins and transmission of Ebola. An interactive map of west Africa gives details of the specific areas affected, with transmission in the past 21 days by district. Public awareness resources link to information on the NHS Choices site, and promotional posters for healthcare settings and for travellers returning from west Africa. For scientists, genetics sequence information includes a phylogenetic analysis of the UK1 Ebola virus genome taken from nurse Will Pooley at the Royal Free Hospital in London and 125 Zaire Ebola virus genomes available from GenBank. Donald A Barr, author of the best-selling Introduction to US Health Policy, has extensively reworked this 2008 book to reflect growing inequalities and the fast pace of change in health care in the United States. A doctor by training, he is professor of paediatrics and education at Stanford University, and lectures on disparities in health care and ways of reducing health inequity. His research interests include the reform of medical education and

training, the high rates of attrition of black and minority ethnic students, and measuring primary care quality. He connects low social status to poor health and addresses the overlap between race and ethnicity in terms of socioeconomic status. In particular, he addresses disparities in childhood asthma and obesity as markers for the changing demographics of children in the US. There are excellent sections on the study of racial bias among physicians and stereotypes as a source of bias. This book will be of interest to everyone with an interest in diversity issues and the effects of inequality on child development, and all those who value and treasure the NHS.

Three Little Birds – Two Women, Two Bucket Lists, Twice the Hilarity ★★★★★

This novel from independent fiction publisher Safkhet is full of love and laughter – perfect for a winter’s evening. Award-winning author Carol E Wyer has a light-hearted take on life and pokes fun at getting older. In her spare time, she gives talks on how to age disgracefully. In this book, Charlie is a woman struggling to get over the loss of her daughter and the breakup of her marriage. She sees her life as being at a standstill.

Focused on helping others, she drifts between being a hospital radio host and doing her job at the Art Café. One drunken new year’s eve, her best friend Mercedes, who is in a wheelchair, cajoles her into writing a bucket list of things she would like to do. Mercedes then swaps Charlie’s list with her own, giving double the stakes. What started out as a bit of fun becomes a challenge as funds are needed to save the hospital radio station. As Charlie puts the needs of others before herself, she struggles to overcome her fears. There is one fear in particular that could prove her downfall. The book’s warmth sucks you in and you cannot fail to like the characters, including a hilarious parrot called Bert.
