650 researchers moved on to field tests on four ranches. Choosing days after moonless nights (conditions that vampires cannot resist) the research team counted the bites on animals treated with ’Vampirinip III’ (warfarin 5 mg/kg) at the time of inspections a fortnight or so earlier. The proportion of cattle bitten had fallen by 75-90%.

Southampton General Hospital. Prof. Donald Acheson, professor of clinical epidemiology at the university, is to direct the unit. Its purpose is to study the aaiology of chronic diseases by epidemiological methods. Investigations will concentrate on three related themes: analysis of the striking geographical variations in disease incidence in Britain and at

their relation to environmental factors; identification and follow-up of people exposed to substances suspected of causing disease; and the study of people in whom cancer and certain other conditions develop at an abnormally early age. The unit hopes also to contribute to the training of research workers in this area. Index to The Lancet The index for 1979, vol. i, was posted on Sept. 17 readers who were on our subscription list on June 30.
