Permission to Publish Abstract Not Granted Editorial Comment: This retrospective analysis of the electronic records of 488 Canadian patients who underwent transurethral prostatectomy demonstrates a wide variation in the preoperative antibiotic regimen used. The compliance rate with the American Urological Association Best Practice Policy Statement was 81% for patients without a preoperative Foley catheter and only 37% for those with a catheter. The authors call for better education and the development of a Canadian guideline for preoperative antibiotic use. Richard K. Babayan, MD

Abstract available at http://jurology.com/ Editorial Comment: This meta-analysis certainly supports the benefit of hydrophilic catheters over nonhydrophilic ones in patients with spinal cord injury. The odds reduction of urinary tract infection was cited at 64%, and 43% for hematuria. Limitations of the study were cited by the authors as 1) only articles published in Chinese or English were utilized, and 2) reports in the meta-analysis had variable Jadad scores and were subject to nonevaluable selection biases. Most of the evidence came from men, and so it does not seem that these data can be applied to women with spinal cord injury without further evidence. Alan J. Wein, MD, PhD (hon)
