Highlights of UEG Week 2017, Barcelona

UEG Week has evolved as one of the world’s major meetings in the field of gastroenterology and hepatology, and it will return to Barcelona, Spain, from 28 October to 1 November 2017. The aim of UEG Week is to attract clinicians and basic scientists from all over the world to discuss advances in our field. A world-class faculty will gather to present the newest research, as well as state-of-the art clinical practice. There are many highlights in the programme generated by the UEG Scientific Committee, some of them presented below: Post-graduate Teaching Programme (PGT). To further improve this important part of the meeting, a three-year rotating schedule has been initiated in 2014 to cover most aspects of the field. In 2017 we will start our ‘second term,’ with an even more improved and adapted programme, to perfectly cover needs. This will allow clinicians participating regularly at UEG Week to receive a continuous state-of-theart update in various gastrointestinal (GI) disorders from leading clinicians. We are especially eager to attract young clinicians to participate in this course. UEG ‘Hotspot’ sessions. Started successfully in 2015, hotspot sessions host intense interactions and discussions between experts and attendants. These sessions include ‘Abstracts on FIRE’ (Frontiers In REsearch), presenting the best abstracts, and is where attendants interact closely with presenters. Another hotspot highlight is represented by the ‘Clinical Trials Revisited’ sessions, where the top trials in gastroenterology from the last year will be presented, critically reviewed and argued by experts. Advances in Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology. This mainly clinical one-day meeting allows for broad coverage of an area and in 2017 it will cover functional GI disorders. These disorders belong to the most common diseases in humans, and sessions such as new therapeutic options, organic functional overlap syndromes and the treatment of gastrointestinal reflux disease beyond acid inhibition will allow clinicians to get a state-of-the-art summary of these entities. Symposia. Interdisciplinary symposia will bring together physicians from different fields, including gastroenterology, surgery and radiology, to discuss the innovative management of gastrointestinal and hepatic disorders. One of the major intentions of our meeting is especially to cover GI cancers. Food, immunity and microbiota are considered ‘hot topics,’ which will be reflected in the programme. Another important format will be ‘From guidelines to clinical practice,’ which will demonstrate how guidelines might be used in daily

clinical practice. It has been a major intention of UEG week to improve patient management across Europe, and this is reflected by the ‘National Societies’ symposia, which will deal with the most common entities in our field. Today’s Science – Tomorrow’s Medicine (TSTM). This programme section has been highly successful in the past and was able to attract more basic scientists attending UEG Week. Next year’s topic in Barcelona focuses on ‘Host Microbiota Crosstalk’. This exciting topic is of crucial relevance in many GI and hepatic disorders, far beyond its key role in inflammatory bowel disorders. UEG Week’s TSTM series will continue to enforce the so important dialogue between basic scientists and clinicians, to pave the way for new technologies and therapies to enter clinical medicine. Abstracts. The poster area is at the centre of UEG Week, and we encourage researchers to submit their exciting work to our meeting and contribute to its success. It is not only the place where the best GI research is presented, it also gives many young delegates the possibility to present and interact within the GI community. We have tried to improve interaction at several steps, and the recently started ‘Posters in the Spotlight’ is one feature, which allows especially young GI fellows to present their research, allowing in-depth interactions. The future of our meeting are the young delegates and several recent initiatives such as Young GI Network, Young GI Track and Young GI Lounge have supported this approach. The ‘last’ day of UEG Week will again include one of the most attractive sessions from the last years, entitled ‘What’s new in 2017?’ We are convinced that attending next years’s UEG week will stimulate academic exchange between basic scientists and clinicians attending from all over the world.
