New beginnings strengthen the Journal’s contributions to the community of SCI professionals These are exciting times in the field of spinal cord injury, and the Journal of Spinal Cord Medicine is pleased to serve as an important forum for the global community of professionals involved in care and research. JSCM approaches its 40th year of publication with a new editor-in-chief, Dr. Florian Thomas, new members of the editorial board, a new international publisher, Taylor & Francis, and new ideas to expand the influence of the Journal, the official journal of the Academy of Spinal Cord Injury Professionals (ASCIP). Recently, JSCM’s editors connected with the editorial board and ASCIP to introduce new members, discuss ways to better serve our diverse readership of professionals, and preserve the historical contributions of the journal and ASCIP. Key to these discussion was Jeffery Johns, MD, who serves as liaison between the journal and ASCIP, a new position that has already facilitated communication. Recent appointments to the editorial board were welcomed, including Amanda Botticello, PhD, MPH, of Kessler Foundation, Steven Brose, DO, of the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center, David R. Gater, MD, PhD, of Penn State-Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, Chester H. Ho, MD, of the University of Calgary, Heakyung Kim, MD, of Blythedale Children’s Hospital, Theodore K. Malmstrom, PhD, of St. Louis University School of Medicine, Michael S.A. Richardson, MD, of the Edward Hines VA Hospital, and Jeanne Zanca, PT, PhD, of Kessler Foundation. These new members expand the board’s expertise in such areas as rehabilitation, pediatrics, internal medicine, outcomes research, and epidemiology. For content planning, our agenda items included topics for special issues and invited reviews, the solicitation of editorials and commentaries, and the publication of conference abstracts and practice guidelines. Plans are also underway to coordinate JSCM’s editorial content with accredited continuing education that will help meet the needs of the multidisciplinary SCI professionals. Thanks to the commitment of Taylor & Francis, a long-term goal is being achieved—the digitization of the complete archives of JSCM, back to volume 1, number 1 in 1978, when it was founded by pioneers in the care of veterans with spinal cord injury as the Journal of the American Paraplegia Society. At present, JSCM’s back issues date to 1995 on Pub Med; we are working with Taylor & Francis to locate missing issues to complete the online archive. We will keep you informed on the status of this important project that will preserve the journal’s contributions to the history of spinal cord medicine in the U.S. The editors discussed the importance of promoting the Ernest Bors, MD Award for Scientific Development, which is available to young investigators who are primary authors of research articles published in JSCM. This year’s honoree is Ryan Solinsky, MD, a resident in physical medicine and rehabilitation at the University of Washington. Dr. Solinsky will present his paper, “A retrospective review of safety using a nursing-driven protocol for autonomic dysreflexia in patients with spinal cord injuries,” at ASCIP’s annual conference being held in Nashville, Tennessee in September. Congratulations to Dr. Solinsky and his co-authors for continuing the bench-to-bedside legacy of Dr. Bors—pioneer in finding better ways to care for veterans with spinal cord injuries.
