Convenor’s Welcome The theme of the 2015 Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM), of the Medical Oncology Group of Australia Incorporated (MOGA), Pathways in Medical Oncology-The Path Less Travelled (Hotel Grand Chancellor, Hobart, 5–7 August followed by Best of ASCO®, 8 August) provided an opportunity to focus on the development of an innovative and novel scientific program. The planning committee’s goal was to put together a program that not only explored many of the contemporary challenges and advances in medical oncology research, discovery and clinical practice but also lesser covered areas of medical oncology practice and research. To this end the program includes major symposia on haematological malignancies, rural and remote oncology and, targeted therapies in melanoma, haematology and lung cancer. We have also expanded the program to include a suite of concurrent Cancer Forums that focus on head and neck cancer, gynaecological oncology, difficult conversations about death, money and error; and, emerging challenges in cancer survivorship. For the first time the MOGA-Novartis Oncology Cancer Achievement Award Presentation will be delivered as the Keynote Address by this year’s Award recipient, our esteemed Australian colleague, Associate Professor Prudence Francis, who will share her experiences in becoming a world leader in breast cancer research and clinical practice. The Scientific Program will also be enhanced by the participation of four distinguished international guest speakers Professor Fatima Cardoso from Portugal, Professor Adil Daud from the United States, Professor Hani Gabra from the United Kingdom and Professor James Chih-Hsin Yang from Taiwan. Each of our international guests will make presentations that provide state of art perspective on scientific and research trends as well as share their specialist tumor expertise in one-off presentations covering breast cancer, melanoma, gynaecological and lung cancer. These will include major symposia across these cancer streams complemented by and including presentations from major Australian specialists. A large industry exhibition and poster display will be complemented by oral sessions for the Best of the Best Research, Trainees and Consultants; and, the opportunity to receive one of six Amgen Oncology Abstract and Poster Awards. The meeting program encompasses a diversity of educational and networking opportunities for Australian medical oncology trainees, young oncology consultants and senior clinicians including specialized Education Programs, Social and Networking functions. Highlights of the social program include the Taste of Tasmania Welcome Reception, the Young Oncologists of Australia Group Dinner Meeting with guest speaker Professor Cardoso, and the Gala Dinner at Hobart’s world-renowned Museum of Old and New Art (MONA). On behalf of the ASM Planning Committee I welcome all delegates, international and national presenters and our professional colleagues from around Australia to Hobart.
