End of life care

December 10, Manchester A new approach to caring for dying people based on the needs and wishes of the person and those close to them has been launched in the form of five priorities for care. The approach focuses on giving compassionate care and is a move away from previous processes and protocols. It recognises that, in many cases, enabling people to plan for death should start well before the end of life and should be an integral part of personalised and proactive care. Through expert sessions and practical case studies, this conference will focus on implementing the new priorities, outcomes and guiding principles. Web: tinyurl.com/pncv68h

The health board will work with healthcare consultancy iWantGreatCare to collect feedback from patients discharged from specific areas of the hospital including medical and surgical wards.

Questions raised over minimum standards consultation

The charity Sue Ryder has begun a campaign for more specialist support for nurses to enable them to provide roundthe-clock care for dying patients and their loved ones. Dying Doesn’t Work 9-5 highlights the lack of 24-hour advice and support. Research by Sue Ryder found that just 8% of clinical commissioning groups in England commission an all-hours support and advice service. Go to www.sueryder.org/not9to5

The RCN has submitted its response to a Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety Northern Ireland consultation on revised minimum standards for nursing homes. The submission reflects members’ concerns that much of the document consists of generalised advice, rather than specific standards that can be measured, evaluated and inspected. According to the college, the document also fails to take appropriate account of the financial, staffing and training implications of some of the recommendations. tinyurl.com/ky4lyte
