NOTABLE NOTES

Dermatology on a High Note Leonard J. Hoenig, MD; Walter H. C. Burgdorf, MD

In this world of ups and downs, songs help brighten our day. Songwriters seek to inspire us with their musical compositions and have even borrowed their lyrics from dermatology to achieve a certain effect. Thus words such as “skin” and “hair” can take on a much deeper meaning when used in song, as the following examples illustrate. Sexually transmitted disease is alluded to in the popular oldie song “Poison Ivy,” recorded by The Coasters in 1959. It warns about a girl named Ivy, nicknamed “Poison Ivy,” because she has been around men spreading a disease that “Lord’ll make you itch!!” Many of us have enjoyed the 1967 rock musical “Hair.” In the show, a long hairstyle symbolized the hippie counterculture and the antiwar movement of those times. Long hair had both negative and positive connotations. For some people it suggested an irreverent lifestyle, drug use, and sexual promiscuity. For other persons it highlighted a new way of life filled with love, peace, and freedom. In 1982, legendary stars Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder performed a song about racial tolerance titled “Ebony and Ivory.” It speaks of 2 piano keys, ebony (black) and ivory (white), that exist side by side. The song expresses hopes that one day all people will live together in “perfect harmony.” AIDS is a devastating illness and has caused much suffering and death. And then there is the stigma associated with AIDS. In 1992, renowned singer Elton John recorded “The Last Song” in memory of Ryan White, who died of AIDS at age 18 years. It describes how an estranged father finally accepts the sexual orientation of his gay son,

terminally ill with AIDS. In honor of those who died from AIDS, we share these lyrics: ’Cause I never thought I’d lose I only thought I’d win I never dreamed I’d feel This fire beneath my skin I can’t believe you love me I never thought you’d come I guess I misjudged love Between a father and his son In 2005, the country music group Rascal Flatts released a song titled “Skin.” It tells the story of a girl named Sarabeth who is suffering with leukemia, and she is “scared to death.” On the day of her high school prom, her hair falls out from the chemotherapy. She wonders if it would be a mistake to go. Then her boyfriend arrives wearing a baseball cap, having shaved his head in sympathy. They go to the prom, they dance, “and for a moment she isn’t scared.” Songs help to fulfill the human need to express our feelings about life’s shared experiences. Sometimes our most tender moments and deepest emotions can find their expression in song, through the language of dermatology. Author Affiliations: Private practice (Hoenig); retired (Burgdorf).
