For this he seat me in au account which came to more

(at the present rate of exchange) than an eminent Dental Surgeon at home charged for the entire plate. I remonstrated with the gentleman in question, pointing out that, in the 1st place his fee seemed very high in relation to the original cost of the plate, and, 2nd, that I thought it was usual for Dental Surgeons to reduce their charges to medical men. In reply to this the gentleman in question stated that his charge for the work done was the regular one he made, and he alleged that the cost of the plate at home ought to have been more than three times what I was actually charged. He further stated that he, as a Dental Surgeon, had been charged full fees by the medical men who had attended him and his family, both in Calcutta and in certain hill station, and therefore he consideied himself fully justified in charging me full rates for what he had done for me. As regards his usual charge for the work, I have nothing to say. Dentists must live, and if their charges to the public are high, the convenience is great, and their services

often invaluable. The point I wish to raise is, can it be the case that medical men in Calcutta, or elsewhere in India, take fees from Dental Surgeons ? I certainly was under the impression that all branches of the medical profession were entitled to attendance from other medical men free. I would consider it just as wrong to take a fee from a Dental Surgeon as I would from an Ophthalmic Surgeon, or any other specialist, but if it is true chat medical men do take fees from Dental Surgeons, I cannot wonder at their making full charges for work done for us. I must ask you not to publish my name, as I would thus identify the gentleman in question, but will, with your kind permission, sign myself X. are
