CURRY-EATERS BEWARE! TO THE EDITOR OF THE

"INDIAN MEDICAL GAZETTE.

Deae Sib,?Some papers, which have lately been appear" ing in your paper from the pen of Dr. Garden, on Disorders of Pigmentation," have suggested to me to ask if any of your readers lias directed his attention to the effects produced by daily eating a quantity of turmeric in curry. My attention was first directed to this by Mr. C. Wood, who is now Officiating Professor of Chemistry "in Calcutta. As far as I can recollect, old Indians" used to have a much more jaundiced look than they now have, and it was supposed to be owiiis to the effect of the Indian climate on their lirers. In Upper India at least we do not now acquire this colour, and it is certain that curry is not now eaten to any thing like the extent it formerly was; in fact, except at the house of a very old Indian one seldom sees curry on the table. The yellow dye of turmeric is a very powerful one, and it seems probable that it will tinge all the tissues of a yellow colour if eaten daily for a number of years. Yours faifchfullv, r\ G. Henderson, m.d. Lahoer. July 8th, 1875.
