CURE FOR SCORPION STING. By R. C.

BANERJEE, b.a., e.b.&i.s.l., Pachbadra, Rajputana. During the year 1891-92, 25 cases of scorpion stings were treated in the dispensary, in the hot weather chiefly. All the cases, whether men, women, and children, invariably presented the following symptoms:? The part stung was painful, soon becoming ocdematous, and pain extending to neighbouring parts, even the lymphatic glauds in the vicinity became tender; and the joiuts about the part stung had dull aching pain. Younger patients were convulsed. But the degree of agony was not less in more grown-up persons. When toes and fingers were stung, pain was more acute, and a peculiar burniug sensation also was felt. By way of treatment many drugs in vogue have been tried, and cocaine and chloroform certainly proved useful, but never effected cure, and I tried the following formula which was very simple in its application, and, unlike chloroform, less volatile?and effects more lasting; and cures safe and certain; in some, instantaneous relief was obtained. 11

mixed together aud kept in a stoppered bottle, when liquified is ready for use. Diode of application.?One or two punctures were made by needles or pins in the vicinity of the stung part, and two to three drops of the above liquid applied by a feather to the punctures. Very few cases needed a second applicaSoon after use of the remedy, all the tion.

symptoms disappeared.

Observations.?Four varieties of scorpions have been collected?the largest of all, the browncoloured one having an average length, labrum to telson, of 4 inches, and cephalothorax 1*5 inches across; the second variety is of dark brown color, with thinner legs, length not more than 3 inches, and the back marked with stripes, arranged longitudinally and in parallels ; the third variety is a small one, hardly over 2 inches in length, having a reddish colour and marked with whitish stripes on the back; the fourth variety is a dark black coloured one, hardly over 1-5 inch in length, labrum to telson, legs and mandibles very thin and tender. The first two varieties like earthy and moist homes, but the other two like gravelly or stony soil: as to the effects in sting, the first and the fourth variety are the strongest. Remarks.?Practitioners who live in districts, rich in such arachiads, will find very useful this formula used by me with such success; and be able to lessen the suffering so ofteu produced by stings of this creature.
