CSPS' Fourth Dedicated Annals Issue Michael S. Wong, MD

T

his Annals of Plastic Surgery supplement marks the fourth California Society of Plastic Surgeons publication featuring abstracts presented at the 64th Annual Meeting of the CSPS, cochaired by Lynn Jeffers and Gordon Lee and held at the Newport Beach Marriott Resort & Spa May 23 to 26, 2014. With the introduction of the opportunity for abstract presenters to have their work be considered for publication in this dedicated issue, the number and quality of submissions have continued to rise. Our fourth issue is a reflection of this. All manuscripts have undergone peer review through their initial selection for presentation by the Scientific Program Committee and the interactive discussion after their podium presentation, followed by the scrutiny of a minimum of 2 reviewers from the CSPS-Annals Review Committee before final executive editorial review and copyediting by the Annals team. Subject matter addressed in this supplement again testifies to the breadth and depth of our specialty, highlighting innovation and new technologies, such as Google Glass and GoPro used in our operating rooms, practices, and educational programs. In addition, it recalls plastic surgery’s roots in transplant surgery and its leadership role in the new field of facial allotransplantation. This year's Garry Brody, MD Family Lectureship Keynote Speaker, Bohdan Pomahac, shared about the Brigham and Women's Hospital experience with Facial Restoration by Transplantation, reminding us of plastic surgery's role in the field of transplant surgery and the colorful contribution of Dr. Joseph Murray’s historic first kidney transplant between identical twins.1 Manuscript topics emphasize the role of plastic surgery in treating anatomy spanning the entire body from the head and neck, breast, trunk, and extending to the upper and lower extremities. Head and neck manuscripts include a case report of primary Herpes Simplex 1 stomatitis after cleft palate repair and the review of Brigham and Women’s Hospital's facial transplant experience. Breast articles include a review of academic centers demonstrating a rise in microsurgical breast reconstructions, as well as studies investigating red breast syndrome associated with acellularized dermal matrix use and mammographic changes after oncoplastic breast reduction. Treatment of the trunk is seen in both the case report on the management of an adult with a giant congenital melanocytic nevus in addition to a review of the largest experience with panniculectomies performed in preparation for renal transplant. The salvage of an elbow with osteomyelitis using a rectus abdominis free flap and the treatment of a ruptured of a femoral artery both speak to the important role plastic surgery plays in the management of upper and lower extremity challenges. This wide range of topics presented testifies to the broad scope of our specialty and bears witness to the creativity and thoughtfulness of our CSPS members and the high quality of work being presented at our annual scientific meeting. This supplement again affirms the importance that California residency training programs play in the innovative work that continues to be done in California and presented at our annual meeting. Nearly every manuscript in this issue has resident or medical student involvement acknowledged through authorship, many as first author. Resident competition papers featured in this work include Stanford’s Management of Abdominal Scars and Design of DIEP Flaps in Breast Reconstruction, UCSF’s Approaches to Microvascular Breast Reconstruction after Nipple Sparing Mastectomy: A Comparison of Technique, and UC Davis’ Extended Fasciocutaneous Flaps for Autologous Mastopexy Augmentation with Upper Body Lift Following Massive Weight Loss: An Early Experience. Special thanks to the Reviewers of our fourth CSPS-Annals (Joseph Carey, James Chao, Susan Downey, Julio Garcia, Warren Garner, Amanda Gosman, Subhas Gupta, Scott Hansen, Debra Johnson, David Kahn, Susan Kaweski, Rohit Khosla, Gordon Lee, Peter Lorenz, Mark Mofid, Dung Nguyen, Lee Pu, George Rudkin, David Sahar, and Derrick Wan) for their thoughtful reviews and probing comments that shaped the manuscripts of this supplement. Continued thanks to the Annals Editor, Managing Editor, and staff for their ongoing support of this Annals and CSPS collaboration. We are very pleased with this May 2015 Annals supplement as it showcases the work of our CSPS members and speaks to the high quality of our Annual Scientific Meeting as well as our deepening relationship with the Annals of Plastic Surgery. The 65th Annual Meeting of the CSPS to be held May 22 to 25, 2015, at the Monterey Marriott Hotel, promises to offer a strong scientific program co-chaired by Lee Pu and Mark Mofid. This scientific meeting is the fifth CSPS program to offer presenters the opportunity to publish their work in a dedicated CSPS supplement of Annals set for publication April 2016. We look forward to further strengthening this relationship between the CSPS and Annals with the next CSPS-Annals publication. REFERENCE 1. Murray JE.
