CRGV in dogs visiting the New Forest I HAVE read several news articles on the recently published research paper in Veterinary Record (Holm and others 2015, see p 384 of this issue) about cutaneous and renal glomerular vasculopathy (CRGV) in dogs, and I am intrigued by the comments regarding the number of dogs visiting the New Forest, which is a high proportion of those known to have contracted the disease. It prompts me to ask two questions, hoping they might be of interest for further research: n The one thing you can guarantee if your dog goes to the New Forest is that at some point it will drink stream or river water. Given this, is there any potential that such consumption could mean dogs pick up microbes passed from animal droppings either in the water or

from water catchments surrounding the watercourse? n Given that people regularly play in water, both for fun and to cool off, might there be an interest in determining instances of ‘upset tums’ in people who have visited the New Forest?

I am wondering if such data were gathered, and were geographically recorded, whether hotspots might appear as ‘commonly visited’ areas. If this were to be the case, then in terms of looking for the cause, it might just provide ‘spots’ of high likelihood, which in an area as large as the New Forest would allow targeted research. Clearly, 10 cases in this area is significant in predicting high repeat cases as a potential, although obviously no other area should be excluded from investigative activity. To move research on, a clear hotspot is ideal for evaluation purposes.
