Correspondence Dear Sir Continuing education and medical schools

I was pleased to read the editorial on continuing education in issue number 2, 1992 (Forglcs 1992). The points made by Professor Forglcs are identical to m y recommendations in a publication of 7 May 1991 in Schweizerische Rundschau f i r Medizin ( P R A X I S ) , which is listed in MEDLINE. According to the results of pilot surveys, the concept of ‘problem-oriented team-work’ as an effective method of learning is wcll known to German doctors, who use it for independent practice-based learning. In a recent survey, 44 of the 114 responders, corresponding to 39%, stated that they participate more or less regularly in metings of groups aimed at improving their practice. The prevalence was higher in the 38 members of the subgroup, who had received their licence in 1985 or earlier (55%). There is discussion that such independent learning might be supported and sponsored outside formal continuing education by a professional organization.

The review actually refers to o u r publication Guidelines for Change in Postgraduate arid Continuing Medical Education, Gale R. and Grant Janet (1990), Joint Centre for Education i n Medicine, British Postgraduatc Medical Federation, London. Confusion about the title bcing reviewed might cxplain your rcviewcr’s concern that we have not dealt comprehensivcly with undergraduate medical education. Dear Sir

D r Gramt’s letter to the editor (12 May 1992), in spite of its brevity, required several readings. Could she, I asked, really be saying that I reviewed a different book than the title indicated (see Volumc 26, No. 3 of Medical Education, pp. 260-26,1)? Apparently she is. References My reply to Dr Grant is unequivocal. There is no mistake about the book that I reviewed. She Forgics 1. (1992) Editorial: Continuing education and medical schools.
