Congress Summary: 21st Congress of the International Society for Rotary Blood Pumps

In the early stages of rotary blood pump (RBP) development, the International Society for Rotary Blood Pumps (ISRBP) was founded in 1992. The ISRBP annual meeting began in 1993. At the starting point of foundation, implantable RBPs were not clinically available. After 20 years, the technology is in practical use and still showing expansion. Currently, there are over 2000 cases of RBP implantation annually—this is an incredible achievement. I believe that this society has played an essential role in this success, showing that the ISRBP founders were wise and farsighted. I was truly honored to be able to host the 21st ISRBP Congress held September 26–28, 2013 in Yokohama, Japan. The meeting was a Joint Congress of the ISRBP, the Japanese Society for Artificial Organs (JSAO), and the International Federation for Artificial Organs (IFAO). The theme of the Joint Congress meeting was “Innovation, Progress and Reliability.” All attendees were freely able to join all three congress programs. There were 917 participants in total who attended the joint Congress, representing over 25 different countries (Table 1). The congress delivered a stimulating program featuring leaders who presented the latest clinical results and innovative research and development covering a wide range of important disciplines regarding RBPs. There were 127 abstracts submitted in total. Ten scientific sessions with 13 keynote lectures and 50 oral presentations were programmed focusing on the following topics: current international status of RBPs, new trends of RBP technologies, pump engineering and device design-1, clinical management of RBP VAD, bleeding and thrombosis, physiological control of RBP, less invasive surgery of RBPs, ECMO, pump engineering and device design-2, BiVAD and TAH.

There were 17 rapid fire presentations and 27 poster presentations offered. The first social activity was the futsal tournament at Sports Park on the first day. Four international teams played and the West Japan Team won the tournament. We had a Joint Welcome Dinner Cruise around Yokohama harbor that took place on the first night and we all enjoyed the beautiful harbor night view and dinner (Fig. 1). The Joint Gala Dinner was held at the Yokohama Intercontinental Hotel grand ballroom on the second night, and we all enjoyed Japanese-French fine cuisine with excellent live classical music (Fig. 2). The awards ceremony was held during the Gala Dinner. The Helmut Reul Young Investigator Award was presented to Tom
