EDITORIAL COMMENTARIES Commentary On: Peyronie’s Disease and Autoimmunity— A Real-Life Clinical Study and Comprehensive Review

This is a retrospective review of a large database with a conclusion that 10% of patients with Peyronie’s disease (PD) have autoimmunity. In reality, as only two patients had rheumatoid, all that can be stated is that there may be an association between PD and psoriasis. To really assess autoimmunity, the antigen that initiates the inflammatory response needs to be discovered by investigating tissue samples and serum antibody levels. Also, rather than assessing a sample that attends a tertiary sexual dysfunction clinic that may exclude patients with other autoimmune diseases, a sample from the general population

should be used. There are many patients with autoimmunity that have normal sexual function and likewise many with significant autoimmune diseases that will not present because of the severity of their condition. The paper gives valuable information but does not advance the hypothesis that PD is associated with autoimmunity. David J.
