Comment on ‘In praise of. . . John Nicholls’ doi:10.1111/codi.12915

Dear Sir, I wanted to add two points to Neil Mortensen’s generous and accurate tribute to John Nicholls [1] as he retires as founder editor of this journal. Firstly, John fulfilled this role from the base of being a supremely good, thoughtful and expert pouch surgeon. He was for many years the ultimate expert you telephoned when it was all going wrong, and he was always sympathetic and constructive in his advice. Furthermore, he would offer to take over the patient from you and ‘sort it out’ whenever this was practicable. All of this meant that hopeful authors were dealing with a

‘surgeon of consequence’ when he either accepted or rejected their offerings. Secondly, he was and is a brilliant networker. Breakfast with John at an overseas meeting is always a happy experience. This is a quality that continually informs an editor’s judgement as he goes about his task of trying to separate the wheat from the chaff.
