COLLABORATIVE PRACTICE AND PATIENT SAFETY By Linda Bell, RN, MSN

I

nterprofessional collaborative practice is defined by the World Health Organization as a situation that occurs “when multiple health workers from different professional backgrounds work together with patients, families, carers, and communities to deliver the highest quality of care.”1 The articles in this issue by Roberts, et al2 and Paradis, et al3 demonstrate that although we are working in the same environment and systems with our colleagues there are some major barriers to delivering high quality care. The inability to overcome the barriers to interprofessional collaborative practice puts patients at risk for unsafe care and negative outcomes.

Here’s what you can do: • Access the Interprofessional Collaborative Practice competencies to determine expectations of team members to achieve this type of practice. • Evaluate the structure and communication of your unit during interprofessional rounds. • Identify gaps between the competencies and current practice on your unit. • As part of your quality improvement process, plan opportunities to discuss how lack of interprofessional collaboration may have affected patient care. • Consider using the articles by Roberts, et al,2 and Paradis, et al3 in a journal club discussion to identify similar barriers in your unit • Evaluate trends of patient and family satisfaction with their ability to participate in care. • Initiate action to improve team competency in interprofessional collaboration.
