vector-borne diseases

Collaboration to fight vector-borne diseases The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has joined forces with the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) to develop a four-year project to tackle vector-borne diseases. The project, VectorNet, aims to create a common database on vectors of diseases affecting humans and/or animals. A network of institutions and research bodies, from both human and veterinary medicine across the European Union, will provide the data for the project. The two organisations explain that many diseases that have not been previously seen in Europe are starting to appear due to the increase in travel, international trade, animal movement

and climate change in recent years. Information on the presence, distribution and abundance of vector-borne diseases and their vectors will be fed into the project to allow EFSA and ECDC to map the disease vectors and make risk assessments to help reduce the risk to European citizens. The project is presented in a short video produced by EFSA that features interviews with Franck Berthe, head of EFSA’s animal and plant health unit, and Hervé Zeller, head of the emerging and vector-borne diseases programme at ECDC.
