Cofactor assisted enzymatic catalysis This issue of Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics focuses in its entirety on the topic of cofactor assisted enzymatic catalysis. Mechanisms for representative enzymes that utilize flavin, heme, adenosylcobalamin, pyridoxal-50 -phosphate, biotin, non-heme iron, or nickel are presented here. This continues a long-standing tradition of the journal to be at the forefront in the field of mechanistic enzymology. The selection of topics for a special issue of this kind is by necessity arbitrary, given the hundreds of wellstudied examples of catalytic mechanisms by enzymes that utilize a cofactor. The goal was to provide a collection of review articles on a variety of mechanisms on interesting, and in some cases less known, enzymes while giving space to both established and new investigators. I want to thank the colleagues who provided their energy and expertise as contributing authors and anonymous reviewers, as well the students, postdocs and scientists who

contributed their talent to the original studies. A heartfelt thank you goes to Andy, Karla, Anne and the rest of the editorial staff of ABB for the incomparable assistance, and to Prof. Paul Fitzpatrick for inviting me back as a guest editor for the journal. I hope you, the reader, will enjoy the readings. Giovanni Gadda Department of Chemistry, Natural Science Center, Georgia State University, Room 549, P.O.
