THE efficacy of clobazam and diazepam in the treatment of anxious patients with gastrointestinal disorders has been compared in a double blind study (Laudano et al., 1977). Thirty-four patients with symptoms of peptic ulcer were classified as "organic" (with radiologically proven disease) or "functional" (X-ray negative). A standard clinical regimen was instituted for all patients with dietary measures, antacids and anticholinergic drugs. In addition patients were randomly allocated to treatment with either diazepam 5 mg three times daily or clobazam 10 mg three times daily for 6 weeks. Patients were assessed at the beginning and end of treatment by means of the Psychoticism, extroversion and neuroticism (PEN) inventory (Eysenck & Eysenck, 1969) and the Taylor Manifest Anxiety Scale (TMAS), and in addition the Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAS) and Wittenborn Psychiatric Rating Scales were completed at
