CITATION PATTERNS OF THE TWO SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGIES DAVID J. HANSON '

Recent research suggests that the literature cited in psychologically oriented social psychology may consist more heavily of journal articles and be published more recently than that of sociologically oriented social psychology (1). That research used a sample of widely adopted social psychology textbooks. In an effort to extend those findings, the literature cited by all articles in the 1989 issues of the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology (published by the American Psychological Association) and the Social Psychology Quarterly (published by the American Sociological Association) was examined. References were categorized as books (including chapters in books), articles in journals, or other (personal communications, unpublished conference papers, films, etc.), and the date of each item was recorded. The JPSP contained 7,714 citations (books = 33.5%, articles = 62.7%, and other = 3.8%) while the SPQ contained 1,024 citations (books = 47.6%, articles = 49.5%, and other = 2.9%). The mean age of JPSP citations (books = 9.1 yr., articles = 9.6 yr., and other = 3.3 yr.) was younger than that of those in the SPQ (books = 16.2 yr., articles = 11.0 yr., and other = 9.2 yr.). It appears that the literature of psychological social psychology (as represented by the JPSP) tends to be more recent and more heavily journal-based than that of sociological social psychology (as represented by the S P Q . These findings further substantiate distinct bibliographic differences between the two social psychologies. REFERENCE
