CITATION Asia-PacificAcademic Consortiurn for Public Health Public Health Recognition Award Professor Mark Livens Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Health Services) Curtin University of Technology, Perth, Western Australia Presented at the 19th Formal Meeting of the Board of Directors, Asia-Pacific Academic Consortium of Public Health In conjunction with the International Symposium, “Children of Indigenous People of the Asia-Pacific Region” 15 December 1992 at the Curtin University of Technology, Perth, Australia The son of Greek immigrants to Australia, Professor Mark Livens was born in Perth, destined to become a leader in Australian Health Promotion as well as a community leader striving for socialjustice and equality for all of its citizens. Few have achieved so much in both areas. Professor Livens is currently the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Health Services) of Curtin University of Technology. Educated in Perth Modem School and the University of Western Australia where he took his PhD in organic chemistry, his early career was spent as an inspired university teacher. He has served as the inaugural head of Curtin’s Department of Chemistry, Assistant Director and Dean of Applied Sciences and Associate Director and Dean of Health Sciences. In his present position qDeputy Vice-Chancellor (Health Sciences), he holds the prime responsibilitiesfor the academicdirection and administrationof the largest health sciences endeavor of any tertiary institutionin Australia. Additionally, he is Chairman of the Board of Managementof the Royal Perth Hospital and Research Foundation, Chairman of the CoordinatingPanelof the StateHealth Consumer Network, President of the Cancer Foundation of Western Australia, and President of the Australian Hospital Association. Professor Liveris’ honors include the Order of the British Empire, the Westem Australia Citizen of the Year and, in 1986, a Kellogg International Fellow in Health, the sole Australian among 3OFellows from 18 countries. He is a member of the Australian Public Health Researchand Development Committeeand, of critical importanceto the Asia-PacificAcademic Consortium for Public Health, a longtime advocate and member of its leadership cadre. His service to this 15-nationConsortiumhas contributed to its strength, and his personal and professionalskills have been a source of academicquality. His vision of Australianacademicoutreachto the broad Asia-Pacific Regionhas been responsiblefor the specialfocus of the 19th Board Meeting held in Perth, Western Australia, on the health of the children of indigenous people. The Board of the Asia-Pacific Academic Consortium takes considerable pride in presenting its Public Health Recognition Award to Professor Mark Livens on December 15, 1992, in Perth, Australia.
