Choosing the best Four exceptional nurses, four uplifting stories and a difficult decision: your challenge is to decide which of the outstanding quartet will be the winner of this year’s Patient’s Choice award. You can vote by phone or text, or by visiting www.patients-choice.co.uk between now and April 25. Organised by Nursing Standard and supported by the Patients Association, more than 100 nominees, all put forward by patients and carers, have been whittled down to the final four. Any would be a worthy winner.

ANY OF THE FOUR PATIENT CHOICE AWARD FINALISTS WOULD BE A WORTHY WINNER

Suren Beebakhy, a community nurse in Greater Manchester, received no fewer than six nominations. One nominator said it had been a privilege to be cared for by him. Suren’s ability to convey a combination of technical knowledge and compassionate care impressed both his patients and our judges. Healthcare assistant Paula Lawrence was nominated by a patient who was admitted over Christmas to St Mary’s Hospital in Kettering, Northamptonshire. Yvonne Pywell had depression and will forever be grateful that Paula took the time to listen and ‘understand without judging’. Ward sister Susan Lovett went beyond the call of duty when one of her patients with terminal cancer received the news he was in his final days. She organised for Richard Jacobs (known as Jake) to be taken home to share a final meal with his family. Widow Amanda says she will never be able to thank ‘sister Sue’ enough. The fourth finalist is midwife Ann Tasker, whose story also involves helping a family overcome tragic circumstances. Harry Marsden had been delivered by Ann, but did not reach his first birthday after developing a brain tumour. The midwife helped his mother Claire overcome her loss, and was the obvious choice to deliver her daughter Lily two years later. Who should win? You decide.
