Chlamydia in cases of bovine abortion in Ireland WE report the findings of a preliminary investigation into chlamydial involvement in cases of bovine abortion in Ireland. Chlamydia abortus has long been recognised as a known major cause of ruminant abortion. However, several newly recognised species of Chlamydia-related organisms have emerged as putative cattle abortifacients. Recent studies in Switzerland (Ruhl and others 560 | Veterinary Record | May 31, 2014

Letters 2009, Blumer and others 2011) and Scotland (Wheelhouse and others 2010, 2012) have identified Chlamydia-related organisms in fetal and placental tissue obtained from suspected cases of infectious bovine abortion. To date, no published studies have been carried out to investigate the incidence of Chlamydia-related organisms in diagnostic samples obtained from bovine abortions outside these two countries. The study group comprised fetal and/ or placental tissue samples obtained from 33 cases of bovine abortion, for which no specific diagnosis had been reached. These cases were originally submitted to the Regional Veterinary Laboratory in Cork to investigate the cause of abortion. The samples were analysed using a pan-Chlamydiales PCR targeting the 16S rDNA sequence (Lienard and others 2011) and an amplicon was detected in eight of the initial 34 samples (23.5 per cent). Sequencing of the amplicons was successful for seven of these samples. C abortus was identified in one sample. Sequences from the remaining six successfully sequenced samples demonstrated that the chlamydial species present in these cases were members of the Parachlamydiaceae. Five of these sequences showed greatest similarity with Parachlamydia acanthamoebae (97 per cent to 99 per cent) with the remaining sequence demonstrating 100 per cent similarity to Neochlamydia hartmannellae. This study confirms the presence of parachlamydial species in cases of cattle abortion in Ireland. The percentage of positive cases even in this small study cohort is similar in magnitude to that observed previously in the UK (Wheelhouse and others 2010) and Switzerland (Ruhl and others 2009) and suggests that these organisms might play a role in cattle abortion throughout Europe. Given the poor rates of diagnosis in cases of bovine abortion and the evidence of Parachlamydia species in fetal and placental tissues from many of these cases, further and more extensive studies are required to confirm the prevalence and potential role of Parachlamydia species in bovine abortion throughout Ireland, the UK and other European countries.
