I have had the joy of practicing pediatrics for well over three decades. During this time, I have witnessed the remarkable achievements made possible through the collaboration of superb researchers and pediatric oncologists/hematologists across the country and, increasingly, the globe. Capitalizing on the strength of carefully structured clinical trials, building block by block on past successes, these scientists and clinicians have created bright futures for countless children and their families. For many of the former life-threatening conditions, the current challenges are seeking to minimize the longterm consequences of the successful treatments. This issue is remarkable for the breadth and depth of the conditions described. Beginning with the childhood lymphohematopoietic tumors and then addressing several of the nervous system tumors, embryonal tumors, and sarcomas, the issue concludes with discussions addressing new and future therapeutic approaches. The final article discusses some of the major challenges confronting the field. The authors contributing to this issue represent a broad and far-reaching array of the real heroes and heroines in the field of pediatric cancer research and treatment. The issue is highly readable and serves as a wonderful update for the practicing pediatrician. An issue such as this that so clearly chronicles the major progress that has been made in far less than half a century provides great hope to pediatricians, parents, and children alike; today’s great challenges will be tomorrow’s great cures. As pediatricians, it is our privilege and duty to remain up-to-date with regard to these achievements. We must be able to recognize the disorders in a timely manner and refer patients to the specialized care that they need and that is available, while offering comfort and supportive care to our patients and their families as they receive what so often is now the life-saving treatment available.
